Ever since celebrating New Years Eve in Barcelona's sun last year I want to make sure I never have to get my new years wishes in cold, windy and snowy Holland. Searching for a remotely warm destination in Europe I came across Lisbon. Weatherwise it's quite comparable to Barcelona and Lisbon seems to be a nice city in a country I've never been before, so Lisbon it is!
Last year we arrived in Barcelona on the 31st, which is quite exhausting, so this year we wanted to arrive on the 29th, to get a little more time to explore the city before the New Years celebrations. Easyjet, the cheapest option to Lisbon, doesn't fly on the 29th however, so we needed to find another solution. Before finding that solution we already booked the flight back on the 2nd of January with Easyjet.
Flying from Holland to Lisbon on the 29th there are 2 options: Transavia from Amsterdam (7:00) or from Eindhoven (11:00ish), with both flights bookable from about 70€. We were originally planning to go with the Eindhoven flight, but when the prices were raised before we booked I was searching for another option, and the search payed of! For 68€, we now take an Easyjet plane to Madrid on the evening of the 28th, go out in Madrid, do some sightseeing in the morning and fly to Lisbon in the afternoon. A cheaper option and another city to see, great!
Amsterdam – Lisbon (Easyjet): 46€
5 nights in Lisbon: 70€
Lisbon – Amsterdam (Easyjet): 34€
Update: Easyjet's flights to Madrid are cancelled from the beginning of December, so we needed to rebook the flights. Calling Easyjet gave us a good solution: rebooking the AMS-MAD flight to AMS-LIS and get a refund for the MAD-LIS leg. So 22€ refund, no 24€ hotel in Madrid and another night in Lisbon for 14€. Makes the trip even cheaper!
